She stuck up for Snape when he was being bullied by James. She is a mudblood. I hadn’t been sure about that just because of Petunia, but Snape made sure we were all aware of that fact when he called her one. We also found out her protection went so far as keeping Harry protected all of his childhood while he is with her family - the Dursleys.
I feel we found out much more in book 6: Slughorn talked about her, her charm, and cheekiness. I feel like we got to know her more through him.
That is what we have, perhaps her feelings for Snape are what we should be looking at? What do you think?

yes Lilly's protection was very strong and it was strengthened when Harry went to live with her family, but it was Dumbeldore who enhanced and strengthened it untill harry turnned 17
